Today, with the advent of technology, the internet and social media, kids are growing up at a much faster rate and playing with much more complex toys from an earlier age. Even 2-and-a-half year olds are playing with iPads! So sit back, relax and get ready to remember what playtime was like before technology took over. My Buddy & Kid Sister When I think of the 80s, one of the first things that always comes to mind is the commercial for My Buddy & Kid Sister - wherever I go, they go. The clip on YouTube has an added bonus as well - ABC's "After These Messages We'll Be Right Back" jingle. Yay! Lite-Brite Lite-Brite was among one of the most technologically advanced toys in the 1980s. Kids could make glowing light pictures by sticking pegs in a board - how cool is that? And by the way, if you had one of these I'm totally jealous. Teddy Ruxpin Teddy Ruxpin the storytelling bear was one of the most popular 1980s toys. Today, a toy like this would be able to recognize what kids said to him and respond and be completely programmed on some sort of chip. Back in the day, Teddy Ruxpin worked with a cassette tape but we all still thought he was the coolest thing in the world. Can you imagine a toy running on a cassette tape today? My Little Pony In the 80s, there wasn't a single girl that didn't have at least one My Little Pony in her toy collection. You could do all sorts of fun stuff with a My Little Pony like comb and brush her hair, tie a ribbon on her tail and look at her standing on her immobile legs. It's hard to imagine a toy like this keeping kids' interest today, but I used to spend hours with my My Little Ponies. Wuzzles OK. I have to admit that I have absolutely no idea what a Wuzzle is. I don't remember these at all. A part-Hippo-part-Bunny, part-Lion-part-Bumble Bee, part-Elephant-part-Kangaree? Is a Kangaree even an animal? Did you have a Wuzzle? If so, please enlighten me. Popples Remember Popples, the pals that pop out of pockets? Can you imagine if a Wuzzle popped out of a pocket? That would be awesome. Especially if it was a part-Elephant-part-Kangaree Wuzzle popping out of a pocket. Pogo Bal The 80s also had some cool physical games. The Pogo Bal was definitely one the coolest physical toys. What sorts of toys get kids out of the house these days? Madballs Another big thing in the 80s was gross-out toys. One of my personal favorites was Madballs - the totally sick, gross, freaky, ugly and funny balls. Gross for one! Gross for all! YouTube has two good Madballs clips. The second is a whole lot grosser than the first. Yeah! Transformers We can't talk about 1980s toys without talking about the Transformers. Here's a compilation of Transformers commercials from 1984 through 1988. Enjoy! MicroMachines MicroMachine guy was really good at fitting as much information as possible into a 15-second television spot.
