The coronavirus-induced trend of shifting from physical locations to virtual locations caught YouTube Spaces in its wake.

YouTube Spaces debuted nine years ago in major cities worldwide as physical locations where creators could access resources including classes, events and state-of-the-art studios.

In 2016, the Google-owned video site expanded the initiative to pop-up events in cities without YouTube Spaces, with more than 45 of those events drawing over 15,000 creators and artists in 20-plus cities.

The pandemic caused YouTube to pivot to a completely virtual model, running over 1,000 events in 2020 and reaching more than 70,000 people across 145 countries.
