YouTube Sets Initiatives to Back Video News Creators

Participants were named for its Creator Program, Sustainability Lab

YouTube revealed the nearly 50 independent journalists who will participate in its Creator Program and the more than 40 digital-first newsrooms that will take part in its Sustainability Lab initiative.

The Google-owned video site sad in a blog post Thursday that collectively, participants in the two programs represent 25 countries, speak nearly 20 languages and report on topics ranging from local news, to national politics, to undertold stories about marginalized communities.

The goal of the Creator program is to give reporters publishing independently the necessary tools to succeed on YouTube, and participants will receive training in industry best practices such as achieving financial sustainability on the platform, audience development, entrepreneurship and video production/editing.

They will receive grants to help fund their new video operations and be connected with experts at YouTube and groups of peers.
