WhatsApp Rolls Out End-to-End Encrypted Backups of Chat Histories

WhatsApp began rolling out end-to-end encrypted backups of users’ chat histories to all Android and iOS users Thursday.

The release follows a similar feature enabling people to migrate their chat histories between mobile operating systems that the Facebook-owned messaging application initially discussed at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2021 event in August, first available on the new Samsung Galaxy foldable models. That option was extended to Samsung devices running Android 10 or higher in September.

Following Thursday’s update, chat histories can now be backed up to Google Drive or iCloud accounts with either a password or a 64-digit encryption key only known by the user, with neither WhatsApp nor the backup service provide being able to access the key or read the backups.
