Reddit Tests Full-Screen Video Player

Reddit is building and testing a new video player that will enable Redditors to view videos on-demand in a full-screen experience. The platform said it is using its Reddit Public Access Network livestream video player as the foundation for the new experience, adding that Redditors have been asking for an improved native video experience for some time. Reddit said it will soon roll out the new player to 2% of its Android and iOS users in order to gather more feedback and continue to make improvements in the weeks ahead. The platform also continued to tweak notifications, saying that its new logged-in inbox is now available to 5% of Android users, while its logged-out inbox is now available to 60%, up from 30% last month. Web Redditors can now mark all notifications as read, which could already be done on Android and iOS, but only 5% of users have this feature so far in order to ensure that it is working properly. More people will get it throughout the week. Reddit began running a small test to boost the visibility of smaller communities with fewer members that Redditors subscribe to by featuring them more often in notifications for the first one or two weeks that Redditors belong to them, and Redditors can lower the frequency of notifications from specific communities or turn them off altogether via settings. On the email front, Reddit made some changes to the appearance of emails Redditors receive when there are replies to their posts or comments, mentions of their usernames or direct messages for them, and some back-end fixes were implemented to correct an issue where some users were not receiving emails for replies. Reddit also added three new emails: new chat requests, upvotes on posts or comments and new followers. The platform said this update is going out to 5% of users who have opted in to similar emails about their activity, and Redditors can choose the types of emails they wish to receive via their settings. The platform is testing five different variants in select countries of a way of prompting people without the Reddit app to create accounts and login to view content, saying in its blog post summarizing its updates from Jan. 20 through Feb. 2, “We know some mobile web users will never download the app. It’s just not for them.” Upvote and downvote are being joined by sidevote this week, as well as new awards Blow a Kiss, Calculating, Heartbreak, Hehehehe and Wait, What? Moderators on Android now have all of the mobile settings iOS moderators already had, including the ability to add and edit posts and user flair; manage post types; and set their primary language.
