Reddit Gives Users More Ways to Control Spam

Reddit began rolling out some new ways for Redditors to help reduce spam on its platform. Android and iOS users can now mark invites as spam, ignore them, accept them or block them via quick action menus accessible by sliding left on each invite. And on the web, invite screens will provide the option of marking them as spam. Reddit also provided an update on an initiative it kicked off in April to improve the search experience on its platform. The company said it has since run a series of experiments to improve results by using less restrictive matching, considering the intent of queries and adding spelling suggestions. Reddit also put a priority on changing how community search on desktop works by defaulting to searching within a community, rather than searching all of Reddit, based on user input. Further design changes and a “Safe Search” toggle that enables Redditors to choose whether they see “Not Safe for Work” results are coming soon. Reddit addressed issues with its new video player in a blog post, writing, “While trying to make the player better, we made some things worse. And one of the biggest things we dropped the ball on is making sure commenting and engaging with the comments works for everyone. What we’ve heard from all of you is that the new video player makes it harder to comment and discuss what’s happening. This isn’t good and was never the intention, so we’re going to fix it ASAP.” Changes that were introduced last week include: Redditors can access play/pause and mute controls when the comments thread is partially open.The video pauses when the comments thread is fully open.The “next comment” widget is back.Tapping on the post title in feed opens up the video with the comments thread partially open. The platform detailed several updates implemented between July 14 and Aug. 3. Highlights include: All platforms: Redditors can now share their avatars.New features were added to the Reddit Daily Digest email newsletter, including cats, completely random posts, daily memes and today in Reddit history.As previously announced, several dormant communities were removed, and their names were made available for future community creators. Android: Some Redditors will start seeing a new Discover tab, which includes a list of communities they follow, as well as ways to browse posts by topics and a scrollable feed with a mix of content.
