Meta Turns Off AR Filters, Avatars on Facebook, Instagram in Illinois, Texas

Facebook and Instagram augmented reality filters and avatars: Now available in 48 states.

Meta said this week that those features were turned off across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Messenger Kids and Portal in Illinois and Texas due to facial recognition and privacy laws in the two states.

The company added that it will develop an opt-in experience to give people in Illinois and Texas access to those features again.

Meta said last November that it would shut down the facial recognition system on Facebook as part of an overall initiative to limit the use of the technology in its products.
