Meta is looking to the north as it strives to build out the metaverse, revealing plans this week for a new engineering hub based in Toronto and the creation of up to 2,500 new jobs over the next several years across Canada.

Head of engineering and remote presence Maher Saba said in a Newsroom post that the majority of those new roles will be in engineering, spanning across extended reality experiences and other technologies, adding that the company will also establish its first engineering teams in Canada for Messenger, remote presence and WhatsApp and expand its existing Canadian Reality Labs and AI Research teams.
