Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during an all-hands meeting earlier this month that the product teams in areas such as commerce, Facebook Dating, Facebook Gaming, Messenger Kids and the Remote Presence team—which was formed in the early stages of the pandemic to develop audio- and video-calling features to compete with Zoom—cannot hire any new engineers or seek any internal transfers.

Alex Heath of The Verge obtained a recording of the meeting.

When Zuckerberg was asked about the possibility of layoffs, he responded, “I can’t sit here and make a permanent ongoing promise that as things shift, we won’t have to reconsider that, but what I can tell you is that as of where we sit today, our expectation is not that we’re going to have to do that.
