Instagram users can now send silent direct messages to other users in the photo- and video-sharing application. When someone sends a silent message, the recipient will not receive a notification. This may be a useful feature when users are in different time zones or otherwise shouldn’t be bothered.

Step 1: Open an Instagram conversation and type the “@” symbol (without the quotation marks) in the text-entry field.
