Instagram Debuts New Resources for National Eating Disorders Awareness Week

Instagram marked National Eating Disorders Awareness Week this week with the introduction of new ways to support users who may be affected by negative body image or an eating disorder.

The Facebook-owned photo- and video-sharing network reiterated in a blog post Monday that while content promoting or encouraging self-harm and eating disorders is prohibited from its platform, people are allowed to share their own experiences and journeys related to self-image and body acceptance.

Noting that while content of this type can prompt important conversations and provide resources for some people but can be triggering for others, Instagram will blur potentially triggering images when users search for or share self-harm-related content and direct those users to helpful resources.

New resources being introduced by Instagram that are specific to body-image issues include contacts for local eating disorders hotlines in certain countries, such as Australia’s Butterfly Foundation, Canada’s National Eating Disorder Information Centre and the U.K.’s...
