Google Wins in Supreme Court Case Against Oracle

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Google on Monday, finding that the Silicon Valley giant did not violate U.S. copyright law when it used a chunk of Oracle’s software code—Java SE’s application programming interface (API)—in developing its Android mobile operating system.

In a 6-2 decision, the Court held that Google’s software development practices were a fair use of the Java SE API. 

Justice Stephen Breyer, in authoring the majority opinion, wrote that Google engineers took “only what was needed” to build a “new and transformative program.”

Kent Walker, Google’s svp of global affairs, called the ruling a “clear victory for consumers, interoperability and computer science.”
