Glassdoor Debuts Company Ratings on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Topics

Job insights platform Glassdoor expanded upon the tools it introduced last September to help its users better understand diversity, equity and inclusion at companies, introducing employee-provided company ratings and salary reports broken out by specific demographic groups Wednesday. The tools released last September enable employers to share their related commitments, programs and goals, including a dedicated section on their Glassdoor profiles where they can share their current demographic information, and the then-new features were highlighted by the Diversity & Inclusion Rating, which became the sixth workplace factor rating available to employees. According to a recent survey conducted by Glassdoor and Harris Poll, 76% of employees and job seekers believe a diverse workforce is an important factor when evaluating companies and job offers. Glassdoor now displays company, CEO and workplace factor ratings by disability, gender identity, parental or caregiver status, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation and veteran status, based on some 800,000 demographic insights from 187,000 employees at more than 3,300 companies. The new tools give job seekers a better understanding of how people feel about working at a company and provides transparency into the DEI efforts at that company, including ratings and pay across demographic groups. Employers can learn from current employee sentiment levels and average salaries broken out by demographic groups, as well as compare their results against those of other companies. Glassdoor also shared the results of its Black at Work analysis of the data it collected. Overall company ratings by Black employees were below average, at 3.3, compared with 3.5, meaning that as a whole, Black employees were less satisfied at work, but those results varied by company. Glassdoor wrote, “This illustrates how varied today’s workplace experiences are for Black or African-American workers—there is no one ‘Black or African-American experience at work.’ Every workplace is different.” The highest-rated of the 28 companies Glassdoor analyzed by Black employees were Apple (4.2 out of five), Bank of America (4.0) and Capital One (3.9), while Macy’s (2.7), CVS Health (2.8) and Walgreens (3.0) brought up the rear. Glassdoor wrote, “Of the 28 employers we examined with at least 15 Black or African-American employee ratings, only three are in the tech industry. This is partly due to underrepresentation by Black or African Americans in tech. For example, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Blacks and African Americans accounted for just 9% of workers in information technology occupations in 2019, despite making up nearly 13% of the U.S. workforce. Unfortunately, most major U.S. tech employers had insufficient data on Glassdoor from Black or African American employees to be included in our analysis at this time.” The company also stressed that its data was based on a preliminary look at a new data source, having been collected over just the past four months, emphasizing, “It’s important to resist the urge to make sweeping claims based on early data. The averages we’ve reported above are not derived from representative probability samples of company workforces—they represent data shared anonymously by Glassdoor users at this time. Readers should therefore take some caution in making conclusive, companywide inferences about the state of race and employee satisfaction.” Glassdoor CEO Christian Sutherland-Wong said in a statement, “We are just beginning to understand the complexity that makes up the employee experience. Glassdoor is delivering a deeper look inside the modern workplace by unlocking insights into how employees feel about diversity, equity and inclusion and by displaying employees' differing sentiment and pay. Increased workplace transparency can show us where we are strong and where we are weak. It can help job seekers discover opportunities where they can thrive, and it can support employers in creating more equitable workplaces and communities.”
