Facebook Tightens the Screws on Rule-Breaking Groups, Group Members

Its removal of civic, political and newly created groups from recommendations is being expanded globally

Facebook ramped up its safety efforts related to groups on its platform, making changes to how it recommends them, as well as restricting the reach of groups and group members that violate its policies.

The social network recently removed civic and political groups, as well as newly created groups, from recommendations in the U.S., and vice president of engineering Tom Alison said in a Newsroom post Wednesday that those restrictions are being rolled out globally.

When groups violate Facebook’s rules, they will be shown lower in recommendations, reducing the changes for users to discover and join them.

Alison wrote, “We know we have a greater responsibility when we are amplifying or recommending content.
