Facebook marked Global Recycling Day Thursday by teaming up with The Recycling Partnership on national initiative Communities for Recycling.

The social network said in a Newsroom post Thursday that 20 million tons of recyclable materials instead head to landfills every year, with just 32% of recyclable materials being collected and recycled, according to The Recycling Partnership.

Public confusion over what, where, when and how to recycle properly is a key driver of this issue, with local communities in the U.S.
