Marcus had been head of Facebook Financial, the group that was created in August 2020 to oversee all of the company’s ventures into payments and commerce, and he was also head of digital cryptocurrency wallet initiative Novi.

He will be succeeded by Stephane Kasriel, who joined the company as vice president of payments in August 2020 after serving as CEO of freelancing network Upwork.

Marcus said in a Facebook post Tuesday that he planned to take some time before his next career move, writing, “While there’s still so much to do right on the heels of launching Novi—and I remain as passionate as ever about the need for change in our payments and financial systems—my entrepreneurial DNA has been nudging me for too many mornings in a row to continue ignoring it.”
