Are Those Twitter Prompts Working? Yes, According to a Study

The social network began encouraging users to reconsider potentially harmful or offensive replies in May 2020

Twitter shared a study of the results of more than 200,000 prompts that encouraged people to reconsider whether they wanted to send a reply that could be harmful or offensive.

The social network began experimenting with those prompts in May 2020.

Data scientists Lauren Fratamico and Kathy Yang wrote in a blog post, “We found that prompts influence positive short- and long-term effects on Twitter. We also found that people who are exposed to a prompt are less likely to compose future offensive replies.”

Twitter found that for every 100 tweets where users were prompted to reconsider their reply:

  • 69 replies were sent without revision.
