Mobile analytics company App Annie released its State of Mobile 2022 report, which analyzed mobile application usage and trends in 2021.

The report showed that globally, there were 230 billion new app downloads in 2021, or year-over-year growth of 5%. Global app store consumer spending in 2021 reached $170 billion, up 19%. Mobile ad spending saw 23% year-over-year growth in 2021, reaching $295 billion.

Looking at different app categories, App Annie found that seven out of every 10 minutes on mobile in 2021 were spent in social and photo/video apps.

Analyzing social apps specifically, App Annie found that Facebook and TikTok led the pack in 2021 in terms of average monthly hours spent per user, with both platforms reaching 19.6
