Yahoo brings third-party apps to home page

By Cory Bergman

Third-party mobile applications are all the rage right now, thanks to the iPhone and Google Android phones. So why not take that same approach to a portal experience on the web? That’s what Yahoo is doing with its new home page, currently in bucket testing (a random set of users will see it). The idea is to not only provide a customized experience for the user, but also let developers offer applications that users can tack on to the home page. In the increasingly fragmented word of the web, it’s Yahoo’s attempt to keep the portal alive — a starting place on the web that goes beyond Google’s search bar.
