NBC Sports expanded its soccer coverage in 2012, the same year that Verus was rebranded as the NBC Sports Network.  The NBC Sports Network smartly capitalized on the growing interest in the NHL, but with many of the major sports tied up in long-term television contracts, the NBC Sports Network made a splash with MLS and Premier League coverage.

The cross-platform coverage of the Premier League has been a huge success since debuting this past August.. Through NBCSports.com and its NBC Sports Live Extra app, live streams from the Premier League have delivered 1.2 million unique visitors 4.9 million visits, 8.3 million live starts and 185.2 million live minutes watched on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports Live Extra app.

“Soccer is an increasingly important sport for NBCSports.com, particularly in a World Cup year. We believe in the Soccerly team, which has a proven track record in the soccer digital world. Their passion for the sport and focus on creating great digital products has already benefitted Soccerly and will benefit our growing soccer readership,” said Kevin Monaghan, SVP, Strategic Relationships, NBC Sports Digital.

By partnering with Soccerly, NBC Sports will compete to be the go-to source for casual and die-hard soccer fans alike seeking World Cup coverage this summer. NBC News recently formed a partnership with NowThis News, and with partnerships like these, NBCUniversal is demonstrating a commitment to engaging with newer and younger fans wherever they may be – whether across platforms or across companies.
