The news editor gathers and compiles news from a variety of outlets, including our television news partners, the Internet, wire services as well as traditional news sources for publishing on the Web site, with an emphasis on delivering breaking news accurately.

The emphasis in this position is on writing and editing stories for the site. This is not a web-design position or a technical position, but requires a strong journalism background and an appetite for writing and reporting the news.

The news editor works with Web site manager and KPRC personnel to create, suggest and execute ideas for TV convergence packages.

The news editor requirements are:

-Accuracy of stories by double checking any necessary facts in assigned projects
-Edited text goes through any necessary reviews
-Checks art/text consistency for assigned projects
-Proofreads all text in assigned projects
-Provides editing and writing support to other teams as needed
-Participates in editing team activities and supports editing team goals
-Works with project teams to create and maintain own schedule

The news editor must have the abilities:

-To work in a team setting, with broadcast partners, and under tight deadlines is key
-To deliver integrated compelling news stories quickly and accurately, using sound news judgment to prioritize, work independently, and manage simultaneous assignments within an intense deadline-driven environment
-To effectively use strong analytical and problem-solving skills
-To aggressively promote the organization and work effectively with all levels of management and staff
-To convey complex subject matter clearly and engagingly
-To work independently as well as part of a team
-To work with Web editing tools
-To catch spelling errors without electronic assistance (on hard copy)
-To be flexible in schedule and adaptable to constant change
-To effectively handle multiple tasks and frequent interruptions
-To work with a positive attitude
-To work well in a multitasking environment paying close attention to details
-The news editor must have knowledge of editing and AP stylebook standards. A writing/editing test will be given.

EDUCATION:

-Four-year college degree; publishing, communications, English, journalism, or related coursework preferred
-Established journalistic track record
-Familiarity with AP style preferred
-Should have proven work experience with a TV station or newspaper

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

-Requires use of office equipment, such as computer terminals, facsimile machines, telephones and copiers
-Requires sitting and computer-related activities for extended periods of time
-Requires ability to read type sizes as small as 6 point on films, color copies, or other types of hard copy
