Following HBO Max Cancellations, DC Animation Content Could Come from Amazon

Warner Bros. Television Studios is closing a deal with Amazon for DC content.

Warner Bros. TV group boss Channing Dungey said at the U.K. TV conference Content London that the studio is “exploring animated IP on different platforms.”

“One of the interesting things that’s exciting for me at this moment, the approach of the previous management was much more like ‘Everything has to stay in house. We don’t want anything to go outside,’” Dungey said. “David Zaslav has been much more open to our exploring all of our animated IP and being able to do it on different platforms.”

HBO Max has cut several animated projects over the past year, including DC project Batman: Caped Crusader, from executive producers Bruce TimmJ.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves. The show was meant to build on the critically acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series, which aired from 1992-1995 and was co-created by Timm.

“Certainly HBO Max is going to be our first stop, but we’re already in the process of closing a big deal with Amazon that’s going to feature some of our DC-branded content in animation,” Dungey added.

Warner Bros. Television has already undergone a significant reorganization that resulted in the firing of 19% of its staff across the divisions of scripted, unscripted and animation. Additionally, the development and production teams of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios were merged last month.
