VMAs ratings up 66% from last year as tweet and digital records are broken

More results are in from last night’s VMAs. We already reported on the tweet records (Miley’s twerking had the highest tweets per minute). MTV has just released the ratings and explained the digital impact, including that they had the “biggest VMA Day in network history.”

With 10.1 million viewers the VMAs were up 66% in ratings from last year. Also, the “Award Show is Cable’s #1 Entertainment Telecast of the Year Among P12-34,” according to the announcement. They also confirmed that according to Twitter, Ustream and Adobe Site Catalyst 15.0, “Miley Cyrus set a new Twitter record for tweets per minute clocking in an astounding 306k tweets per minute, surpassing the previous record holder, Beyonce’s Super Bowl performance.”

Further, artists who participated made tons of money from the big TV event. “Timberlake posted a 1,876 percent increase in sales, while ‘NSYNC was up 156 percent.  Following two-time VMA winner Bruno Mars’ first televised performance of his soon-to-be-released single, “Gorilla,” the song immediately debuted on the iTunes single chart. Additionally, the album “Unorthodox Jukebox” re-entered the iTunes album chart top 10 at #5,” according to the announcement.
