Velma Is Confirmed as Queer in New HBO Max Scooby-Doo Halloween Movie

Well, it’s official – Scooby-Doo’s Velma is queer.

In the new HBO Max animated movie Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!, the brainy detective is seen having a visible crush on Coco Diablo, the head of a notorious costume crime syndicate behind the creepy costumes worn by past villains captured by the Mystery Inc. gang. While the official trailers didn’t include the scene, fans have posted clips of Velma and Coco’s flirtation online.

One Twitter account, @ScoobyDooHistory posted Velma’s introduction to Coco:

Speculation about Velma’s queerness has circulated for years since the franchise debuted in 1969 with the Hanna-Barbera animated series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! and its various film and TV incarnations. James Gunn, who wrote the screenplay for the 2002 live-action film tweeted in 2020 that he had “tried” to write Velma as queer.

This past May, Mindy Kaling unveiled her upcoming Velma adult animated series, which will also stream on HBO Max. Kaling, who will also voice the character, has reimagined her version of Velma as South Asian.
