Brand Bowl ranks top Super Bowl TV ads via Twitter

By Cory Bergman

For the second year running, Boston.com is hosting Brand Bowl 2011, a leaderboard of the top Super Bowl commercials calculated by reactions posted on Twitter. It’s powered by Mullen and Radian6, which track the sentiment and number of tweets about the brands in real-time (here’s how they do it).

So far, Volkswagen’s awesome commercial, “The Force,” which was released in advance a few days ago on YouTube, is dominating the charts. It’s also dominating YouTube, with 12 million views so far. (If you ask me, it will be hard to beat.)

Here’s the detail page for the Volkswagen ad, which is overwhelmingly positive. Once the game gets underway, Brand Bowl will link the ads (as they become available) on Hulu, where you can also vote for your favorites. An estimated half of Super Bowl advertisers will run concurrent social media campaigns this year.

Last year, Doritos won the top spot, followed by Google. To get your own tweets to appear alongside the leaderboard, use the hashtag #brandbowl.

By the way, during the game, we’ll be tweeting our observations of how the game and its commercials are tied to social media. Just follow us at @lostremote.
