Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max’s Head of Original Content, recently discussed in an interview with Variety the value of Warner Bros. Discovery IP as a crucial component of the streamer’s future.
During the interview, Aubrey provided information on some of those IPs.
Here’s an update on where several HBO Max shows and projects stand:
The redeveloped Green Lantern series
HBO Max remains “excited by the opportunity to make a big four-quadrant space opera with Greg [Berlanti] and Sarah [Schechter],” Aubrey said.
The Penguin allows for a longer-arc character story
The Batman spinoff The Penguin takes place between the end of The Batman and the upcoming sequel and serves as a bridge between the two films. A release date has not been set other than the TV series premiering before the theatrical release of the upcoming sequel.
“The goal of this is to show what Oz’s life is like and that’s very much in the streets of Gotham, trying to get up and over as only the Penguin can,” Aubrey said.
The eight episodes allow for a “longer-arc character story with a lot of delicious twists and turns and new characters,” she added of the series, which will be about Gotham at that street level.
Aubrey isn’t spilling the beans on a possible expansion of the Peacemaker Universe
The update is there is no update.
“I absolutely cannot say a single word about any of this,” Aubrey said.
But whatever comes from James Gunn’s “wild and inventive” mind will be exciting for all, she said.
It: Welcome to Derry is set up for success
More news should be coming shortly on the It series, which Aubrey describes as a “real recipe for success and for delighting fans,” thanks to the involvement of Andy Muschietti, who directed It and the sequel It Chapter Two.
Muschietti, along with others, are so “deep into this mythology and they have such a firm handle on the storytelling around these characters and also the demented scares that they’re putting into things,” she said.
A Harry Potter series isn’t happening … yet
Aubrey said there’s no series in active development right now, but HBO Max is very much in the business of creating new content for Harry Potter fans and thinking of what to do next, as these fans always want more storytelling. So it’s possible we’ll get a Harry Potter TV series one of these days.
