Streamers took a backseat to Oscar nominations this year, earning roughly half of last year’s tally.
Netflix, Apple and Amazon had 19 total nominations, down from the combined 37 the streamers received last year.
Notably, Apple made history in 2022 when its film CODA won the Oscar for Best Picture, beating out Netflix’s The Power of the Dog and becoming the first streamer to win in that category.
This year, only one film from streaming was nominated for Best Picture: Netflix’s German-language film Quiet on the Western Front. The movie received nine nominations in total, placing it second among Oscar nominees behind Everything Everywhere All at Once’s ten nominations.
Netflix received a total of 16 nominations, which is fewer than the 27 nominations it received the year before. Other titles include Blonde, The Sea Beast, Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and two short documentaries, The Elephant Whisperers and The Martha Mitchell Effect.
Apple received two nominations: Brian Tyree Henry in Causeway and the animated short film The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse. Amazon received only one nomination, for Argentina, in 1985.
Disney had 11 nominations, two of which were from Disney+: Pixar animated feature Turning Red and live-action short Le Pupille.
