Rupert Murdoch joins Twitter, deletes a controversial tweet

The man who bought MySpace just joined Twitter, attracting 55,000 followers and counting. News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch is a verified account at @rupertmurdoch, and he’s already deleted a tweet.

“Maybe Brits have too many holidays for broke country!” he tweeted, which disappeared a short time later. He later tweeted, “I’m getting killed for fooling around here and friends frightened what I may really say!”

In true Twitter fashion, the deleted tweet sparked its own hashtag, #murdochsdeletedtweets, fanned by Former British deputy prime minister John Prescott. Prescott had tweeted Murdoch, “I’ve left you a Happy New Year message on my voicemail.”

Murdoch seems to be taking Twitter seriously, sending out 17 tweets since he joined on Dec. 31. He also engaged in a little back-and-forth with Twitter’s Jack Dorsey.

Murdoch is the latest big-name, late-adopter to join Twitter. Mashable has compiled a list of 42 names who joined Twitter over the last year, from Jerry Seinfeld to Billy Crystal.
