Nielsen Social: The Biggest Moments on Twitter from the 2014-15 TV Season

By Adam Flomenbaum

With the 2014-15 TV season now behind us, Nielsen Social looked at the biggest moments on Twitter across series, specials, and sports events.

ABC (including ABC Family) claimed four of the Top 10 most social series this season, the most of any network. Still, people cannot get enough of AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead’: 1.3 million Tweets were sent about the premiere episode on Oct. 12, 2014, reaching 7.4 million people throughout the night.

Even so, ‘Empire’ steadily climbed the Twitter TV charts throughout the season, and as more people binge watch during the summer, FOX’s breakout hit has a chance to unseat ‘The Walking Dead’ next year. A total of 2.4 million Tweets were sent about ‘Empire’s’ two-part finale on March 18, 2015, making it the most tweeted series episode this season and since Nielsen Social began tracking TV-related Twitter activity in October 2011.

For specials, ‘The Oscars’ may be the most prominent night of the year, but ‘The GRAMMYs’ drove more than double the number of tweets.

The biggest night of the year across all categories was Super Bowl XLIX, which drove 25 million tweets; compare that to the much-hyped ‘Fight of the Century’ between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, which drove 5.8 million tweets.
