News Convergence Manager, KGTV

KGTV, San Diego’s ABC Affiliate, is seeking just the right person
to join our newsroom in the newly created position of Convergence
Manager. We need someone who can lead a growing part of our newsroom
to the next level in digital media and push us to deliver content in
new ways. If you’re a visionary leader who can think strategically

CONVERGENCE MANAGER

The convergence manager works with the news director and Web managing
editor to improve the quality and relevance of coverage on air, online
and on mobile, and to increase new media skills and participation in
the newsroom. This position reports to the News Director and will be
actively involved in daily content decisions for both the Web and TV
side of the business.

Responsibilities:

+ DAILY NEWS: Attend news meetings; offer creative ideas for
enhancing coverage on all three platforms. Encourage and assist
reporters in gathering and creating unique content for web and
mobile. Lead news staff in producing and updating content on the web
and other digital platforms. Work with News Director and Web Managing
Editor to create and communicate plans for extended coverage of major
events.

+ BREAKING NEWS: Work with News Director and Web Managing Editor to
establish a protocol for pushing breaking news to Web and mobile
sites immediately. Understand the technical details of this process
and make sure the newsroom is trained to respond.

+ TRAINING & PARTICIPATION: Enforce newsroom training, with emphasis
on quality. Ensure that TV staff is contributing to Web and mobile
in regular and meaningful ways, with an awareness of results.
Prepare a monthly report on progress toward convergence goals.

+ NEW PROJECTS: Work with News Director and Web Managing Editor to
identify new projects and evaluate the success of existing ones.

+ NEWS PROMOTION: Work with News Marketing Manager to monitor and
improve the effectiveness of cross-promotion, including TV-to-Web and
Web-to-TV.

+ TECHNOLOGY: Apply knowledge of content management systems,
multimedia editing and publishing (text, video, audio, Flash, etc.)
and newsroom workflow to improve publishing processes on all
platforms.

+ LEADERSHIP: Act as a manager and leader in the newsroom by
communicating long-term vision, goals and strategy. Successfully
lead news staff to execute plan across multi-platforms.

Qualifications:

Experience successfully managing a News web site preferred. Proven
news judgment skills an absolute must. Strong familiarity and
understanding of online audience trends and the forces driving change
in traditional newsrooms. Demonstrated knowledge of web technology.
Experience in both online and TV news is ideal; candidates with very
strong digital media backgrounds and an interest in working in a TV
newsroom will be considered.
