Netflix has announced the launch of the Exploding Kittens mobile game and TV series. Exploding Kittens – The Game will debut on Netflix in May, followed by an adult animated series next year featuring the voice talents of Tom Ellis (Lucifer), Abraham Lim (The Boys), Lucy Liu (Elementary), and Sasheer Zamata (Woke).
“The co-development of a game and animated series breaks new ground for Netflix,” said Mike Moon, Netflix head of Adult Animation, in a statement. “We couldn’t think of a better game to build a universe around than Exploding Kittens, one of the most inventive, iconic and original games of this century! Netflix is the perfect place to explore this growing franchise and we are so fortunate to be working with this incredible team!”
The mobile game and animated series take inspiration from the Exploding Kittens card game, designed by Elan Lee and Matthew Inman from comics site The Oatmeal. After seeking to raise $10,000 through their Kickstarter campaign, the duo raised $8.7 million in 30 days, making Exploding Kittens the No.1 most-backed project in Kickstarter history, selling over 18 million games.
Exploding Kittens – The Game will retain the same gameplay where players draw cards to avoid the Exploding Kitten. Players will also have access to two new exclusive cards: Radar, which reveals to players the position of the Exploding Kitten closest to the top card decks, and Flip Flop, which reverses the order of the cards in the deck. The game will be available to Netflix members with no additional fees or in-app purchases.
The Exploding Kittens animated series follows the conflict between Heaven and Hell when God and the Devil head to Earth in the bodies of house cats. Inman and Shane Kosakowski serve as showrunners.
