NBCUniversal Joins Forces with Meta to Bring Peacock, The Office to VR Headsets

Meta and NBCUniversal have teamed up to bring the media company’s Peacock streaming app and a range of properties to the Meta Quest VR headsets.

The experiences will be based on NBCUniversal’s The Office; Blumhouse, whose newest Halloween film will be released this week, Halloween Horror Nights; and Universal Monsters, which features characters like Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster.

“Virtual reality isn’t some obscure hobby anymore,” said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at Meta Connect 2022, an annual developers conference, alongside other content partnerships and product news. He stated that millions of people are already using VR to play games, interact with others and collaborate with coworkers.

Specifics about how Peacock and the other VR experiences will appear on the Meta Quest headset are not yet known.

The Peacock streaming app, which enables users to view NBCUniversal television via their headsets, will also be made available on Meta Quest devices the following year. But for its part, NBCUniversal is eager for any chance to give Peacock some additional momentum.

Peacock has reached 15 million paid subscribers, NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell announced last week in a CNBC interview. The newest figure is 2 million more than the 13 million the parent company Comcast reported during a second-quarter earnings call, praising Peacock’s acquisition of day-after-air rights to episodes of NBCUniversal series from Hulu as well as a robust content lineup as a driver in the increase in subscribers. That figure was flat from the previous quarter.
