There’s a New Trick to Make Netflix Sound Better

The nuance of sound frequently goes unnoticed, but it can significantly alter the mood of a memorable scene and the audience’s reaction.

Now, there’s a new trick to make Netflix programming sound better. The streaming service has partnered with German electronics juggernaut Sennheiser to convert surround sound mixes into a spatial audio presentation that can play through stereo speakers or headphones.

“Netflix spatial audio helps to translate the cinematic experience of immersive audio to any stereo, so the work creators do to bring you into the story happens no matter what device you use to watch Netflix,” the streamer said in a statement.

Netflix spatial audio is compatible with all devices, all streaming plans and doesn’t require surround sound speakers or home theater equipment.

Spatial audio will roll out across Netflix starting Thursday, and it’s pretty easy to use. Hear it for yourself by typing “spatial audio” into the search bar and choosing a show or movie that supports it from the search results. As of now, choices include Stranger Things 4, Red Notice, The Witcher and more.

The streamer plans to extend the capability to other features it supports, such as 4K, HDR, Dolby Atmos and Netflix Calibrated Mode.
