Knight News Challenge opens, gets donation from Google

By Steve Safran

This year’s Knight News Challenge is now accepting proposals. The challenge, which gives grants to innovative news and information startups, is now in its fifth year. This year Knight is getting a boost from Google, which donated $2 million to the Knight Foundation. Half of that will go directly to the challenge, with half going to fund other news innovation grants. What we like about this year’s challenge is that it is opening up its definitions and categories a little wider. There are four categories: Mobile, Authenticity, Sustainability and Community. (See our article on the topic for the definitions.) Over the past four years, Knight has awarded $23 million to 56 innovators. The competition is steep; those 56 winners were chosen from 10,000 entries. If you’re interested, you better hurry. The deadline for entries is December 1.
