HBO and Rai Fiction have renewed the drama series My Brilliant Friend for a fourth and final season.
The Italian language coming-of-age drama is based on the bestselling series of the same name from author Elena Ferrante. Season 4 of the HBO and HBO Max show will be based on the fourth and last novel in the series, the My Brilliant Friend: The Story Of The Lost Child.
My Brilliant Friend is the tale of Elena Greco and the most important friend in her life. In 1950, she met Raffaella Cerullo, whom she has always referred to as Lila, in the first year of primary school. Set in a dangerous and intriguing Naples, their narrative spans more than 60 years of their lives and delves into the mystery of Elena’s brilliant acquaintance Lila, who is both her closest friend and deadliest adversary.
“When we decided to bring Elena Ferrante’s masterpiece Neapolitan Novels to the screen, we knew Elena and Lila’s story had to be told in its entirety. It’s both thrilling and bittersweet to embark on this fourth and final season,” said Francesca Orsi, evp of HBO programming, in a statement. “We look forward to completing the quartet and know The Story of the Lost Child will bring the series to a close with the same heart, intimacy and epic storytelling that has defined Elena and Lila’s journey from the beginning.”
Season 3 debuted in the U.S. last month on HBO and HBO Max.
