Deborah Vance isn’t going anywhere.
HBO Max has renewed Hacks for a third season.
The series focuses on Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), a legendary Las Vegas stand-up comedian, who must reinvent her aging act in order to keep her Palmetto Casino residency, and Ava (Hannah Einbinder), a young comedy writer. She has been unable to obtain work due to an insensitive tweet and her reputation of being arrogant and haughty. When Ava’s boss assigns her to work as Deborah’s new head writer, the two gradually become friends as Ava encourages her new boss to take greater risks, and Deborah, in turn, assists Ava in working through her personal issues.
The series’ first season received many accolades. Season two, which explored the evolving dark mentorship between Deborah and Ava, debuted to critical acclaim on May 12.
“We congratulate Hacks’ extraordinarily gifted executive producers and cast, and our partners at Universal Television,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of original content in HBO Max, in a statement. “We are overjoyed at the audience and press response to the new season, and glad to give viewers more of this gorgeous, hilarious, moving show.”
Universal Television president Erin Underhill added, “The first two seasons of Hacks — expertly crafted by Lucia, Paul and Jen —gave us beloved, complex characters who make us laugh and feel deeply. We’re thrilled that our HBO Max partners have renewed this standout series for a third season, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for Deborah, Ava and the rest of our outstanding ensemble.”
