HBO Max has renewed its adult-animated series Harley Quinn for a fourth season.
“We are ecstatic that HBO Max wants the story of Harley and Ivy to continue,” said executive producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker in a statement. “And we are equally thrilled that this next season will be in great hands with Sarah Peters as our showrunner and Ceci Aranovich overseeing animation production, as they have both greatly influenced the show with their brilliance since the beginning.”
Harley Quinn follows the misadventures of Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (Lake Bell), her best friend and lover, after breaking up with her partner, the Joker.
In Season 3, the pair, as the new power couple of DC villainy, return to Gotham after finishing their “Eat. Bang! Kill. Tour.” Along with their ragtag gang–King Shark (Ron Funches), Clayface (Alan Tudyk) and Frank the Plant (JB Smoove)–the duo tries to become the best version of themselves while simultaneously working towards Ivy’s long-cherished aim of transforming Gotham into an Eden paradise.
“Three seasons down and I can’t even begin to think about the new levels of chaos and trouble that Harley, Ivy and the gang can get into with a fourth season,” said Peter Girardi, evp of alternative programming at Warner Bros. Animation. “But I’m grateful to our partners at HBO Max for continuing this insane ride with us so we can all find out.”
The news comes on the heels of Warner Bros. Discovery canceling the nearly-completed $90 million feature film Batgirl, based on the DC character, and Scoob!: Holiday Haunt, a follow-up to 2020’s Scoob. Warner Bros. Discovery also removed dozens of shows and movies from its HBO Max library over the past few weeks with more cuts on the way as the company plans to merge its two streaming services—HBO Max and Discovery+—by the summer of 2023.
These moves have led many to wonder which DC projects are on the chopping block as speculation abounds over the future of HBO Max content.
