You can see the work of production designer Michael Wylie and set decorator Halina Siwolop hiding in plain sight on Showtime’s “Masters of Sex.” It’s apparent even on the show’s Twitter feed, as each tweeted image captures the verisimilitude of the period drama, thanks to Wylie’s and Siwolop’s devotion to accurately depicting the feel of the era, from overall concept down to the pictures hanging on the walls.
In our latest So What Do You Do? feature, Wylie and Siwolop describe the path that took them from novices to Emmy-award winners, the research, work and collaboration that goes into designing and dressing the show’s set, and the surprising ways the Internet comes in handy:
In television, there isn’t a lot of lead time. Luckily, we have wonderful vendors in Los Angeles who have great stock to pick from or can manufacture items for us within a couple of days. We use Etsy and Ebay — without them, we wouldn’t have been able to find some specific pieces of set dressing.
