'GetGlue HD' will be revealed at Social TV Summit

By Natan Edelsburg

The Social TV Summit is upon us. If you’re unfamiliar with this top-exec affair that’s become a platform for the social TV industry, read our recaps here and here. The Summit returns to Los Angeles and will host it’s first ever awards. Emmy-Award winning and Twitter, Pinterest and Foursquare early investor Greg Yaitanes will keynote the summit but it looks like the big news will be coming via Alex Iskold’s presentation on GetGlue.

According to the Summit’s website during his afternoon Keynote Iskold will, “will provide the audience with his and GetGlue’s vision of ‘what’s next’ in Social TV…..with a sneak preview of GetGlue HD.” CEO and Founder Alex Iskold told Lost Remote that, “GetGlue is announcing a significant product update focused on re-imagining discovery around television.” We wanted to offer a few predictions on what this news could be. GetGlue has seen exceptional growth that’s led to further funding over the past year. Most recently they translated their virtual sticker fandom into the Comic-Con experience with several TV partners. Here are five predictions for GetGlue HD, some more serious than others.

  1. They will rethink their iPad add to compete more seriously in the second-screen market: The social TV company hasn’t updated their iPad app since January 9th. On January 10th they told NewTeeVee that a new app was in the works for Q1. This could be their play at the tablet world.
  2. They will offer a brand new design and user experience: Similar to the #allnewfoursquare launch, the announcement won’t necessarily change GetGlue features but reposition them in friendlier format with new ones on top of it.
  3. They will launch a television station: Mark Cuban once launched HDNet as he saw an emerging trend in programming delivered in HD quality. Maybe the social TV company is set to take their 12 million and throw it into social TV reality and scripted programing on the traditional screen.
  4. They will launch new features for network partners: GetGlue has worked with 75 networks, mostly with stickers. While the stickers are a no-brainer go to for the superfan who will pounce on anything related to their shows, networks must be dying to do more. Also, the Social TV Summit audience/speakers is largely of that community.
  5. They will launch new features for brands: Last fall, GetGlue worked with EW and The Gap for check-in promotions. An interesting announcement would be a jump on monetization offering some kind of ad network or sponsor-able opportunities across their community.

In addition to learning more about ‘HD’ we hope they’ll also reveal an update to the 2 million users they cited at the end of the year, which I’m sure has grown significantly. Also to note, competitor Miso is not on the agenda of speakers. What do you think the big announcement will be?
