Georgetown student emerging as web political strategist

By Steve Safran

The top emerging web campaign adviser may be a Georgetown student, who is giving away the advice for free. James Kotecki, 21, is building a name for himself on YouTube as he dissects the candidates’ online vids. His message sure sounds familiar: “The web isn’t TV.” Just because you’re a politician who is “on the web” doesn’t mean you’re using the web well. So as candidates for the 2008 election increasingly put video online, Kotecki critiques. It is not all snark – he compliments the vids he likes. He has constructive advice on vids that could be better. This is what 2008 campaign advice looks like. The candidates seem to be listening – and they’re even responding to James. He may wind up as a significant force shaping this campaign.
