Disney Goes Back to Basics With Its Ad-Supported Tier, Disney+ Basic

Disney’s ad-supported tier is on the way, and now more details are emerging.

According to Business Insider, which got a hold of a pitch deck for the service, the company calls the new tier Disney+ Basic.

As Disney previously announced, the service will debut the ad-supported tier on Dec. 8 for $7.99. Subscribers will have to pay $10.99 to avoid ads.

Pre- and mid-roll advertisements will be 15 and 30 seconds long and non-skippable on Disney+ Basic for both long- and short-form programming, the news outlet reports.

As previously reported, the ad load will be four minutes per hour.

Ads that are displayed to those 16 and older will be subject to some restrictions, including alcohol spots. Additionally, ads that are displayed to those 15 and younger will be governed by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and its rules and will not use behavioral or geo-targeting. Preschool-related content won’t have any ads when it launches.

Additionally, there will be frequency limits, such as once an hour and twice daily.

Disney believes that the introduction of a cheaper ad-supported tier will keep and attract subscribers. The company anticipates that the number of subscribers to its streamer will reach 165 million by the end of 2024, though it didn’t share a forecast of Basic subscribers.

Disney+ reports 89 million U.S. viewers each month. Although it has a reputation for providing family-friendly programming, it said 62% of its viewers are adults without children in the home, with the remaining being parents, according to the news outlet.
