Colbert announces run for president

By Steve Safran

Stephen Colbert has announced he will enter the 2008 race for president of the United States. (Video.) Tuesday night on “The Daily Show,” Colbert announced he was “officially announcing that I have decided to officially consider whether or not I will announce” a bid, but said he would make that announcement “on a more prestigious show.” True to his word, Colbert made the announcement a half-hour later on Tuesday night’s “Colbert Report,” saying he will be putting his name on the ballot in the South Carolina primary, running as a favorite son. (Stephen’s from South Carolina.) How does this shake up the political landscape? Colbert had CBS News Senior Political Analyst Jeff Greenfield on as a guest to ask him about this latest development. “What impact has my candidacy had on the campaign in the last three minutes,” Colbert asked Greenfield. “This could be it for Mike Gravel,” replied Greenfield astutely. Colbert is currently plugging his book “I Am America (And So Can You!)” Stephen’s Wikipedia entry has already been edited to reflect his announcement.
