CNNx Empowering Digital, Second Screen Viewers to Customize Experience

By Jordan Chariton

CNNxAs part of CNN’s upfront presentation in New York City Thursday afternoon, which Lost Remote attended, the news network unveiled CNNx; a new technology that empowers the digital and second screen viewer to virtually control the rundown of their news experience.

The 24/7 program, which has been in the works for a year, allows authenticated viewers the ability to operate CNN TV’s rundown of previous and upcoming segments.

For example, as viewers watch “Anderson Cooper 360” in real-time at 8pmET in the middle of their smart TV, tablet, or mobile screen, they will see a rundown of CNN’s previous and upcoming segments on the right side of the screen. They can then rewind to watch previous segments earlier in the day, or fast forward for a description of an upcoming segment. As part of the fast-forward feature, other elements will appear on the bottom portion of the screen, like news articles, videos, and social media content related to the segment’s topic.

“It really is the marriage of all of the ability you have to customize content and search for what you want on the Internet, with the broadcast experience of TV,” SVP and GM of CNN Digital, KC Estenson, tells Lost Remote.

The new second screen platform will be available for set-top boxes for certain cable and satellite providers later this year; CNN is currently in negotiations with several providers. The technology debuted today, only on the iPad.
