CNN.com top ‘gateway’ to news

CNN.com says it’s the top “gateway” to news with its home page generating 60 percent more unique visitors than those of its competitors in June, according to Nielsen/Netratings. CNN.com’s Political Ticker blog attracted more than 4 million unique visitors and 12.3 million page views in June, making it the number one political news blog, CNN.com says. On the video front, CNN.com served 108 million video streams, a 70 percent increase over last year, which includes nearly 4 million live streams served by CNN.com Live. The new user-generated content site iReport.com reached 4 million streams in June with more than 2.5 million unique users and 9.5 million views. Press release with more data below…

PRESS RELEASE — Nielsen Online recently named CNN.com the Internet’s No. 1 news gateway, with the site’s home page generating 60 percent more unique visitors than those of its competitors. During the month of June, CNN also experienced record-setting traffic to iReport.com, the network’s uncensored, unfiltered, unedited, user-generated community Web site; and CNNMoney.com, CNN’s exclusive business site, generated an 1800 percent increase in video streams served versus last June. CNN Digital Network also ranked No. 1 among the top five news sites in June for “Time per Person” with 29.3 minutes, maintaining a significant lead over top news and information sites.

CNN.com’s Political Ticker again stands as the No. 1 political news blog with more than 4 million unique visitors and 12.3 million page views in June. Providing users with the latest news and analysis from CNN’s Best Political Team, the Political Ticker maintains a strong lead over other political news blogs including those from MSNBC, The New York Times, ABC News and The Washington Post. For the month of June, CNN.com served 108 million video streams, a 70 percent increase over last year, which includes nearly 4 million live streams served by CNN.com Live, the network’s live, multi-stream video news service. Reports about the final Democratic primaries on June 3 and wide-spread flooding in the U.S. Midwest on both June 17 and 18 yielded the strongest days for CNN.com Live. Additionally, the international edition of CNN.com experienced a 175 percent increase in video streams served in June versus the same time last year.

As a key component of CNN’s dedicated “Issue #1” coverage of the economy, CNNMoney.com, the online home of FORTUNE, MONEY and FSB: FORTUNE Small Business magazines, also showed growth in video streams served in June, documenting an increase of more than 1800 percent over the same time last year. The exclusive business site also is up 11 percent in unique visitors over last month and has seen a 23 percent increase year-over-year in its “At Work” audience, according to Nielsen Online.

iReport.com increased 22 percent in page views for the month of June, pulling in more than 2.5 million unique users and generated 9.5 million views. (Source: Nielsen Online). Events and topics that drove the most participation in the iReport.com community include Midwest flooding, same-sex marriage, California wildfires and high gas prices. June also yielded the single most viewed iReport since the site’s launch: a video of an approaching tornado submitted by Bob Potempa from Monee, Ill.

According to Nielsen Mobile, CNN Mobile remains the No. 1 mobile Internet news provider taking the top ranking for the 19th month in a row with 8.2 million unique visitors.
