CNN uses CSI technology for inauguration coverage

By Matt Sokoloff

We usually assume that most of the technology we see on CSI isn’t real. But this time CNN is using the same technology that CSI used to recreate the crowd at a high-school prom (YouTube Video) to recreate Obama’s inauguration. CNN is partnering with Microsoft and using their Photosynth technology to create a 3-D version of what they are calling “The Moment.”

Users are asked to take a photo at Noon when Obama takes the Oath of office. CNN will then stitch the photos together using the “synth” technology to create the 3-D recreation.

From what I can tell it looks like if it’s a success they might try this again and just pick another “The Moment.” (Full press release at WebNewser.)

We’ve seen MSNBC’s Inauguration video player, CNN’s “The Moment and I’m sure many new outlets will be using Twitter/blogs/Facebook. Is your website doing something unique online to capture “The Moment?”
