Billy Crystal to host Oscars after trending on Twitter

By Natan Edelsburg

It’s official, Billy Crystal will be hosting the Oscars. The actor and comedian hasn’t hosted since 2004 but is generally remembered by all ages as one of the best hosts of our time. Crystal made the announcement on Twitter less than thirty minutes ago, in a pretty funny way:

After the news came in yesterday that Eddie Murphy would no longer be hosting as a result of the messy firing of producer Brett Ratner. Instantly, Crystal started trending on Twitter. Yahoo! even reported he was trending. Did newly crowned producer Brian Grazer recognize how the social web was reacting to what’s been looking like a decline of the Oscar brand? It’s definitely a good move, one that Oscar fans will joyce over and see as a crowdsourced win. It also seems like Crystal’s already leveraging his presence on Twitter and seems to have made the tweet himself from an iPad.
