Big Brother Has Big Social Night

By Steve Safran

bigbrotherCBS’s Big Brother had big social media buzz Thursday night, taking the top spot in the Nielsen Social Content Ratings. Since I didn’t watch, I’ll let Entertainment Weekly share why it was a particularly juicy show:

James and Natalie’s whirlwind summer showmance on Big Brother this season came to an abrupt halt this week when Natalie shunned James over despair about possibly being voted out… and then got voted out.

Hey now! Showmance! Although a new word to this writer, Wikipedia defines it as “A romance that develops between two individuals in theater, or on films and television series and between reality show contestants or participants for the running period of the show.” So feel free, students, to use “showmance” in your next essay and cite Lost Remote.

150,000 unique social media accounts interacted with Big Brother across Facebook and Twitter, with a total of  225,000 social interactions overall. Interactions include mentions of Big Brother but also include other social actions such as likes and shares. In second place was NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon which, as we noted last week, has serious social media game.

Have a good weekend. And may the next showmance be yours.
