Another look at Ledger Live

By Don Day

I revisited the Ledger Live webcast today, to see how the webcast is doing a week into its run. Your comments were insightful and even helpful on the original post last week. As soon as I hit the page, I clicked the play button… and got audio from two sources – the video itself, and an ad to the side that played user-uninitiated audio. AHH!

A few thoughts…
– The webcast is still almost 7 minutes long.
– Host Brian Donohue already seems more comfortable. Instead of teasing the newspaper, he teased the website, though the tease was somewhat generic
– Next, a phoner with a columnist on the way to a lighter story about a supposed insult to Staten Island. Some video of Staten Island instead of a phoner graphic would have been a nice touch.
– An “On The Beat” interview with another reporter featured Donohue talking to the reporter in a TV monitor. It was awkward at best. They covered the interview with what appeared to be VNR video of Bruce Springsteen. This was the first video of the webcast, nearly three minutes in.
– A video essay on a man trying to get NJ a state song was great. It opened with the man signing his song – and talked about how he’s been working on the project for quite some time. The story was about two minutes – and could have been a bit tighter, but all in all it was nice.
– The webcast ends with Donohue reading some viewer e-mails

The webcast is already getting better, but I continue to question if there is viewer benefit here. It seems like it would be more efficient to provide the best elements on demand and skip the rest.
