How GetGlue aims to reinvent the TV program guide

GetGlue HD is almost here. The major update to their app, being released for the iPad, will happen sometime this month. Buzz began around HD before the Social TV summit when Iskold revealed more details how how they’re moving beyond the check-in. While the final launch date hasn’t been announced, we spoke to the NYC-based CEO who gave us further details on what to expect.

GetGlue works with 75 TV networks to run promotions via stickers and more. Their platform has given every network a chance to award fans with stickers every time they check in. While Foursquare badges already seem like an item of the past as they’ve grown and launched an ad platform, stickers are still near and dear to TV fans’ hearts. Now they’ll be taking over 500 million social TV data points to make TV discovery even easier.

Alex Iskold: We’ve been working on it for 5 months.

LR: How will it be different? What are the key features?

Iskold: As before, you can check-in, unlock stickers and chat friends and fans while watching your favorite shows. We are adding two new big pieces both focused on discovery. Once you check-in with the new app, in addition to chatting with fans you will discover on the second screen the best videos, pictures, tweets, and articles about your favorite shows. It’s a stream of all cool related content for the show.

We are also going to help you discover what to watch using brand new, personalized guide. Anytime when you open it, the guide displays shows, movies, sports that are on right now just for you (above). You will also be able to use the guide see what is coming for you next week (below), and in the future; discover new movies in theaters on the weekends and get suggestions for what to stream on iTunes, Netflix and Amazon.

LR: How are you using all of GetGlue’s data points to help discovery TV further?

Iskold: The new app is leveraging all your data, your friends’s data and 500M data points from entire community to power your personalized experience. You get recommendations for new shows and movies on tv, streaming and in theaters. Each recommendation displays similar things you already like, friends who like it, friend reviews and stats from entire GetGlue community.

LR: How are you using the EPG from TMS? Any other data sources?

Iskold: We are using TMS data to power the main guide view. We also using various other databases and feeds and are indexing iTunes, Netflix, IMDB, Fandango, and Amazon.
