Why Anne Rice Quit Christianity

annerice.jpgHorror novelist Anne Rice made a summer news splash with her Facebook announcement: “I quit.” She left Catholicism, a religion she re-entered during her middle age years. Her resignation drew more than 2,000 comments and well over 3,000 “likes” on the social-networking site.

According to the Guardian, Rice took particular issue when her preacher likened Barack Obama to former Russian head-of-state Joseph Stalin. The preacher made this comparison based on the fact that President Obama’s views on abortion.

Here’s a Rice quote from the article: “I increasingly saw what I thought was sophistry and lies, I thought: ‘I can’t abide this.’ I can’t remain with this. This is crazy. There is no basis in scripture for any anointed hierarchy, let alone a male hierarchy. It’s just not there. And how in the world did this man-god die, preaching against the temple, and then we wind up with St Peter’s in Rome? How did that happen? There were so many issues where I thought the church was flat-out immoral. I had to leave.”

Yesterday, Powell’s Books made 1000 titles from Rice’s private library available for sale on their website. The used bookstore had purchased 7,000 books from Rice.
